His assumption about the Taleban checking opium production is wrong. The reduction in 2001 was caused not by any morals but by a huge and well spread drought in not only Afghanistan, but in neighbouring countries too. In India its legal opium cultivation suffered reduction by 60%. Myanmar's illicit opium production fell by 70%.

To give credit to the Taleban was a ploy led by the American Oil firms. From 1999 they wanted to pipe Turkmenistan gas through Westerrn (Herat & Nimroz)) Afghanistan . To do that they wanted to show the people of the US that the Taleban had at least stopped growing opium (ignore the brutalities that they were continuing to infliict on their women). Hoping thereby to win US public's support to do business with this detestable entity.

The UN helped in this charade. A team of delegates from 8 countries were taken by the Taleban and Pakistan's ISI to a part of Achin in Jalalabad province where the drought had ruined other crops too. But, no mention was made of other crops by this docile delegation, which just said that there was no opium cultivation to be seen. Had they gopne to the east of Achin they would have seen some opium cultivation that had survived.

Truth is Americans don't want to know the truth or wont believe it out of arrogance and ignorance. Who wants to believe that their sending their children into a country so that politicians can profit from the drug trade. Who wants to believe their fiends and comrades are being shot dead and blown to pieces just so fat cats in government can just get fatter. Its sad but true. We live in a day and age when its not popular or politically correct to go against the information spewed from the media or to have a different world view than the "average American". People don't understand that the same corporations that own and decide what news and information that is chosen for media distribution is owed by these same unscrupulous individuals.

Thanks for your remarks and your reply.

You are so "right-on". Not long ago, I saw, on television, an author talking about people being complacent. She goes on to explain, during the "Great Depression" in the 1920's, there was 4,700 or some-odd demonstrations/riots, yet in 2008 there was only around 20 demonstrations. People are afraid to lose their SUV's, their iPods or do anything which may make them appear vulnerable, as we all truly are.

When are the politicians going to "get" that not everyone wants the US to storm into their country and wage war in the name of "peace", "capitalism", or whatever it is. What would be the reaction if Pakistani troops stormed into the US, attempting to fix broken levees in Louisiana? They feel as though they're doing the right thing and our country isn't competent enough to do the job, apparently. Although I don't think we storm into other countries just because we think we're doing the right thing, there are certainly ulterior motives, which are the real reasons. Why did we invade Iraq? Why are we still there? I'm almost thinking we're in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya now because all the talk of armageddon. If it happens, we've got many troops in the region, we'll be in a good spot to fight for the oil. And Libya has some nuclear communities around 13,000 feet with excellent climate. I wouldn't be surprised if the elite are building bunkers in the area in case something really goes down.

One thing due for change, but not sure will happen, the margin between the wealthy and the rest of us has been shrinking. In 1998, the top 5 percent of the US population had more wealth than the remaining 95 percent of the population, collectively. Obama and his bail-outs, the amount of money they spent, giving to the already-rich a holes in this country, should have been giving to every US citizen but those with money. Of course all of the money would have poured back into the economy, as opposed to sitting in some wealthy a hole's bank account.

Calgon... take me away!!

Mistukos,

Great input and lots of true words. I wish more people would share your view point. But unfortunately people are content with their lives, which will, with no doubt, get worst and worse exactly because they do not care about what their government is doing around the world and in their own country.

The powerful governments are fighting two massive wars in the world. One is with tanks, guns and fighter planes against the "terrorist," and they other is the public relations war against their own people to control their minds and "brain stain" their way of thinking; justifying their every clandestine and illegal action.

With ignorance and pride we are letting them steal the life from us, from our children and from human kind.

The hypnotized world has to wake up!

I've thought about this and it is so obvious; we're in Iraq because of oil, control the region, control the production, and obviously we're in Afghanistan because of opium. The night, I was flipping through television channels and I saw this comedian, Eddie Griffin and he touched on something that had not occurred to me. The United States owes China a lot of money and China apparently has the largest population of opium users. So it would make sense, we're there to control the production of opium. The Govt. would never admit it and it is probably all underground, as was the CIA smuggling of cocaine in the past. I've heard, it is their main crop, the farmers need to do something, what a load of crap that is. Unfortunately, these days, more people are too insecure, afraid to lose their SUV or their ipad, they'll never speak out; they've a herd mentality. A while back a friend of mine gave me "Pocket World in Figures, 2010 Edition". He subscribes to the Economist and received this book as part of his subscription. It is amazing, in 2007 the US defense spending was the most out of all countries at $552.6 billion, next in line was UK at $63.3 billion, then France, $60.7 billion, China $46.2 billion and Germany at $42.1 billion. What a massive amount of money. Sadly, so many people are misinformed in regards to drugs, marijuana as a schedule 1 drug, apparently worse than cocaine and amphetamines. So much of law enforcement wants the war on drugs to continue because it funds their fancy equipment and salaries. As well, many people are against marijuana and they have no idea why it is actually illegal, they think it has something to do with getting high, as opposed to the real, commercial reasons. The Navy produced a movie called, "Hemp for Victory" during WW II, however, from what I know it was never aired, but can be found on Youtube. Another category of interesting figures is prison population. The total prison population, for the latest available year. #1, The United States at 2,310,984, with China next in line at 1,565,771, then Russia @ 887,723, Brazil @ 440,013 and in 5th place, India @ 373,271. I realize China might have some strict laws, but how many people in the USA are in jail for non-violent crimes? I recall doing a paper for community college, back in 1991 and back then the average spent per inmate was $35,000 per year. Let us not forget, prisons are a "for profit" business. Sadly, if we let people out of jail for crimes such as possession of a plant, the amount of money the country would save, still would not go to those in need, it would end up in the pockets of politicians I'm sure.

The older I get, the more I learn, the more I realize ignorance is bliss. I'm glad I don't have children, to a certain degree, as much as the thought is grand, I'm not sure I want to bring children into this world. Corruption at every level, people rarely help their neighbors, and people are so complacent it is amazing. All in the name of insecurity / money. Will we ever get over ourselves?

Typical, this is a great article which needs to get to the masses, though so many Americans will not care, they're content, driving their gas-guzzling SUVs with a false sense of security. Too insecure to drive an efficient vehicle, as long as they have diet pills and mind numbing drugs, they're content to go to work and do nothing about the terrible things going on around them. This shows the real reason we are in Afghanistan, not because Osama Bin Laden, rather because we now control the region therefore we control opium production.
